Debunking 5 Common Website Myths: What Every Small Business Owner Should Know
Let’s remove all the clickbait and misinformation and get back to basics! Creating a website for your small business doesn't have to be as complicated as it may seem. Lately, I'm finding there to be an over-saturation of information online surrounding websites for small businesses that is untrue! Let me clear up some of those common misconceptions for you, allowing you to make real decisions surrounding websites and your business needs.
1: Building a website is a one-time thing:
Some might believe that once a website has been built it stops there. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Your website is forever evolving and adapting to your business and its needs. Just like other areas of your business, your website also requires maintenance checks to ensure its functioning to its full capacity. 2: Design doesn't affect my clients, and sales:
As consumers, we all know that first impressions count. A strong captivating design based on your brand identity will make your business memorable and position you as an expert in your field on first look. How do you ask? Personality, professionalism and flair.
3: I’m not making any sales, will a website fix that?:
Real talk here - maybe/maybe not. A great website and brand can only support your business so much if your marketing strategy, customer service or product sucks. As with all successful businesses, everything must work in tandem to deliver an overall experience. Have an amazing product? Chances are a well-designed website will in fact make your investment 10x worth it.
4: Only online businesses need a website:
Whether you're an online business or your presence is mainly in direct contact with your clients, every small business can greatly benefit from a website. We are living in a heavily digital world. For the vast majority of consumers when searching for a product, item or service their first move is to search for it online. If your business is not online you're missing out on potential clients or customers, resulting in missed opportunities. Now this issue can be simply solved by introducing a website for your small business. Making you accessible to all, gaining online “foot traffic” and creating a digital presence. Overall when it comes to business we are always trying to make ourselves present and visible. You're leaving it to chance if your only online presence is socials.
5: The more features the better:
Some would believe that an overtop very elaborate website is the way to go. Let me tell you it isn't. Some companies will try to sell you a website that is heavily overdesigned with elaborate animations and gimmicks. Yep, I called them gimmicks. Accessibility is usually in the toilet by the time you add in all of these shiny objects you're being sold. Why is accessibility important? Accessibility ensures that all users, including those with disabilities, can access and interact with your website. This includes individuals with visual impairments, hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, and motor difficulties. By designing with accessibility in mind, you create an inclusive online environment that accommodates everyone.
Ultimately, the goal is to allow your audience to find the information they need, in a clear and simple way. This could be the difference between signing your ideal clients or finding someone else that they feel is a better fit. A well-balanced website that operates and functions well will keep people coming back.
